Brazil, “Carne Fraca”. President Temer risks impeachment, JBS still in the storm

Last March, Brazilian President Michel Temer, during a private meeting, gave his consent for JBS meat giant, Joesley Batista (pictured) and his brother Wesley to pay for the silence of former President of the House Eduardo Cunha, who is in prison since last October. Batista himself provided the police with this information. The scoop, which triggered massive protests in Brazil, and requests for impeachment for the president, were initially reported by O Globe newspaper. According to the paper, the Batista brothers (who are now in the United States) would work with investigators to “soften” JBS’s position in the Carne Fraca investigation, the judicial scandal on a presumed corridor circuit Brazilian agro-industry. O Globe also reports that these last episodes come into an already complicated period for JBS. The company has reported discouraging results for the Mercosul corporation which is part of the Curos division. However, according to Reuters, JBS did not cancel the listing of the US subsidiary on the New York Stock Exchange.
