There is a change in the air at Sézane. The brand, founded in 2013 by Morgane Sézalory, has announced a strategic and stylistic evolution towards more refined aesthetic codes, closer to the world of luxury. In a nutshell: premium. The result of two years of work, this new chapter aims to raise quality and slow down the pace of new releases. There is, however, a catch. The departure from its distinctive bohemian heritage and fears of price increases have sparked debate among the brand’s long-standing community. Valued at more than EUR 1 billion, with sales exceeding EUR 500 million, the label now faces the challenge of winning over international markets and moving into the premium end of the market without losing its connection with its original customers. This is how Sézane aims higher.
Sézane aims higher
Sézane’s decision to move towards the higher end of the market reflects its desire to mature alongside its customer base, focusing on tighter control of production volumes and an overall elevation of its products, as the founder stressed to Vogue Business. As part of this transition towards more elevated stylistic and aesthetic codes, the brand has decided to rethink its fashion offering from the ground up. New silhouettes, cleaner lines and, above all, a level of manufacturing rigour that takes its cues from the great maisons. Against this backdrop, leather goods have become a key driver of the new strategy.
The bags and accessories line has been completely reworked to offer softer shapes, made from high-quality leather and featuring meticulously crafted details. With an average price of around EUR 290 for leather bags, the category is set to become the perfect bridge between the brand’s original identity and its new ambitions. In other words: reaching a more discerning and sophisticated customer while maintaining prices that remain more accessible than those of its direct competitors in the luxury segment.
The image makeover
This conceptual shift is also finding direct expression in the visual rebranding. The logo has abandoned its linear typeface in favour of a serif font, while the new artistic imagery coordinated by Mark Kean conveys the aesthetic of a high-end fashion magazine. The stylistic evolution is immediately reflected in the clothing offering too. This brand’s historic pieces have given way to more structured designs — from jackets to coats priced at up to EUR 510.
Sézane’s repositioning is also reflected in its retail network and cultural initiatives. Alongside strengthening its international presence, particularly in the United States, the brand continues to enhance its presence in Paris through temporary shops dedicated to art. Completing this 360-degree lifestyle vision is a project to convert a villa in the Marais into a charming boutique hotel — a move designed to consolidate the brand’s image, reinforce its responsible ethos and rekindle the interest of major international investors.
