YKK is investing USD 150 million in the construction of its third manufacturing site in India. According to the Japanese zip fastener group, “the new plant will establish a production system capable of supplying products that meet a wide range of customer needs”. YKK, an acronym for Yoshida Kogyo KabushikiKaisha, was founded in 1934 by Tadao Yoshida and operates manufacturing facilities around the world, including Italy. Last November, the company acquired the Prato-based business Bluclad.
YKK invests in India
YKK Corporation has announced that the third production facility, which will be developed through its subsidiary YKK India, will be located within the Origins by Mahindra industrial hub near Chennai. The site will cover approximately 75,000 square metres — roughly the equivalent of ten football pitches — occupying part of a 15-hectare plot. According to the Japanese group’s plans, construction is expected to be completed by February 2028. The new factory will operate in coordination with YKK’s two existing facilities in the state of Haryana, in northern India. According to the company’s press release, the site “will incorporate YKK’s advanced technologies to meet growing domestic demand as well as export-oriented manufacturing markets”.
India’s manufacturing momentum
Sourcing Journal notes that YKK’s investment is one of many initiatives aimed at advancing India’s manufacturing sector. India is not only emerging as a promising luxury market but is also strengthening its position as a production hub for the fashion industry, alongside the wider South-East Asian region. The area is benefiting from global supply-chain diversification strategies as companies seek to reduce their dependence on China and build more geographically balanced sourcing networks.
