An EUR 18 million investment is set to strengthen the competitiveness of Spain’s leather industry, particularly in Catalonia. Novicuir has laid the foundation stone for a new facility dedicated to “the preparation and preservation of hides, from collection at slaughterhouses through to subsequent processing for the tanning stages”. The investment has been supported by the Catalan Government and several companies operating within the leather industry. The new industrial facility will be built in the Plans de la Tossa industrial park in Santa Margarida de Montbui (Anoia) and will cover an area of approximately 12,000 square metres.
An EUR 18 million investment
The new plant is designed to improve quality control, increase production efficiency and ensure full traceability of hides, from their origin through to the finished product. In addition to enhancing traceability, the project aims to minimise the environmental impact of hide processing by optimising the use of resources and reducing emissions. The Novicuir project has been promoted by Palomeras y Gambus, Rémy Carriat and Curtidos Badia, which “benefit from the strategic support of a major shared customer”. The consortium has also received financial backing from the Catalan Government’s Department for Business and Labour, which has allocated EUR 300,000 to the project.
A new raw hide processing facility
The new plant is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of the Conca d’Òdena leather manufacturing district. Located midway between the area’s principal tanning hubs, it is expected to create around 20 new jobs. According to ACCIÓ (the Catalan Agency for Business Competitiveness), Catalan Minister for Business and Labour Miquel Sàmper commented: “This investment will enable the Conca d’Òdena to reinforce its position as a strategic hub for the leather industry. It is a clear example of the circular economy in action and an initiative that will generate high-quality employment”.
