Artificial Intelligence and its practical application. Robotics and space tech. Techno-green transition and cybersecurity. This is the reference context for VivaTech, Europe’s most important exhibition dedicated to innovation and startups. The latest edition (the tenth) took place in Paris from June 17 to 20 and, among highly futuristic solutions, projects and installations, there was also the oldest material in the world: leather, present in LVMH DreamGallery and part of the presentation of 12 innovative projects implemented by 11 brands of the group, in collaboration with their technology partners. LVMH’s immersive experience showed how innovation enhances every stage of the value chain. Among the innovative projects on display was also the leather cutting machine designed by Comelz for Louis Vuitton.
Leather at VivaTech
The 10th edition of VivaTech welcomed more than 200,000 people, 15,000 startups and around 2,700 international exhibitors. Within the event, Louis Vuitton presented an intuitive, high-performance solution that uses Artificial Intelligence to support artisans in the leather cutting process. Developed in collaboration with Comelz, the machine digitizes the leather after a scanning process, and then follows the automatic placement of the leather, with AI identifying and precisely flagging the characteristics of the leather. In this way, it optimizes the cutting process, suggesting how to cut it in the best possible way and reducing waste. The operator modifies or validates the machine’s proposal.
Assisted artisan
According to Alex Corsico, CEO of Comelz, “the objective wasn’t to create a simple system for automatic leather inspection or classification, but to develop a flexible technology capable of learning from the customer’s experience, adapting to their quality criteria and supporting decisions, without ever replacing the human factor”. Corsico emphasizes that the machine displayed at VivaTech by the LVMH group has been on the market since the second half of 2025.
It was designed by Comelz’s internal R&D center. “The approach applies to two different contexts”, Corsico explains. “On the one hand, some of our customers in the automotive sector already use the technology in fully automatic mode. On the other, particularly in the luxury world, the same solution can be used according to the concept of the assisted artisan. In this way, technology doesn’t replace human know-how, but enhances it and helps preserve the identity and uniqueness of each brand”.
