Grace Wales Bonner has been appointed artistic director of Hermès menswear. Following last week’s announcement of Véronique Nichanian’s departure after 37 years at the head of the men’s line, the French maison has today officially confirmed the name of her successor. The British designer, one of the most influential voices of her generation, will lead the brand’s menswear in a new creative direction. The appointment marks a historic moment for Hermès, entrusting one of its most strategic divisions to a young female designer deeply rooted in contemporary culture. Wales Bonner’s debut collection is scheduled for January 2027.
Wales Bonner takes the helm of menswear
Born in London in 1990 to a Jamaican mother and a British father, Wales Bonner founded her eponymous label in 2014, shortly after graduating from Central Saint Martins. Her distinctive aesthetic — blending cultural heritage, sportswear influences and refined tailoring — has earned her both critical and commercial acclaim, leading to collaborations with Dior and Adidas. “I am deeply honoured to have been chosen as the creative director of Hermès menswear. It is a dream come true to follow in the footsteps of such inspiring artisans and designers. I am grateful to Pierre-Alexis Dumas and Axel Dumas for the opportunity to bring my vision to this extraordinary maison”, said the designer.
A choice that breaks new ground
Wales Bonner’s appointment marks a major turning point: Hermès has chosen a woman — and one of Jamaican heritage — to lead one of its most strategic categories. “I am truly delighted to welcome Grace into Hermès’s creative family. Her perspective on contemporary fashion, craftsmanship and culture will help shape the maison’s men’s style, merging the brand’s heritage with a confident sense of the present”, commented Pierre-Alexis Dumas. The designer succeeds Véronique Nichanian, who turned the men’s division into a key pillar of the brand’s success.
In the first half of 2025 alone, men’s ready-to-wear and accessories generated EUR 2.26 billion, up 5.5%, according to Vogue Business. In recent months, Wales Bonner had been linked to several major fashion houses. The Hermès appointment therefore defies predictions: until recently, rumours suggested an internal candidate would replace Nichanian. With Wales Bonner, Hermès opens a new chapter — one defined by diversity, cultural exploration and creative renewal.
