China and sustainability: “some” polluting tanneries closed in Hebei

The sanctioned companies are all in Hebei Province, a region rich in industrial zones surrounding the megalopolises of Beijing and Tianjin. These firms specialise mostly in the tanning of small skins or upholstery. It is not known how many are affected, but the Chinese government has forced the closure of several companies: the measure is part of the action to prevent water pollution. According to The Sauer Report, despite the restrictive order, some of the companies involved continue to stock raw skins and wet-blue. The modernisation of its tanning industry, currently still highly polluting, is one of Beijing’s targets.
