Leather masks and 9 different screaming looks. Lady Gaga won the 2020 MTV VMAs, winning 5 awards, including artist of the year, song of the year and the first Tricon Award. Above all, she is the queen in leather and style: the pop star confirms herself as a lover of extravagance, with a choice of breathtaking outfits. High fashion dresses, such as a sequin jumpsuit by Valentino, and everything was custom made, like the multicoloured creation realised for the occasion by Iris Van Herpen (the one combined with a pink mask). The outfits have conquered the public and bounced on social networks all over the world. But to represent the real stylistic provocation (and not only) was her masks’ choice: small works of art worn by the singer throughout the evening.
“Protect yourself and mask up!”. This is the cry launched by Lady Gaga from the stage during her performance. It was not a casual choice to wear a different mask for every occasion of the evening. It is an “accessory” with a strong symbolic value. And it wasn’t trivial surgical masks, but real design pieces: in studded leather the mask worn for the photo shooting together with the statuettes. The one designed by Lance Victor Moore was in red leather with two long horns, while the MaisonMet mask was in metal mesh. The one with a display that reacted to the sound of her voice is signed by Diego Montoya. One exception to the mask: a Plexiglas was a helmet with a lunar appearance that recalled the astronaut of the VMA statuettes.
