Sol & Luna leather design, from the workshop to the jet set

Sol & Luna conquers the jet set. Twenty years ago, a Spanish married couple bought a farm in Paraguay and, recovering the leather from the cattle they raised and slaughtered, they started a parallel business. They began to use their leather for furniture. But also, to explore new avenues and give impetus to particular projects, such as the upholstery of everyday objects that usually have nothing to do with leather. Like refrigerators. The result? An enormous success that has brought their products into the homes of many stars of the silver screen.

The beginnings

The story of Sol & Luna began in 1998. Carolina Sanchez de Movellan and her husband Carlos Ortiz de Zuniga bought an estate in the Paraguayan Chaco, as they tell El Mundo. Here they raised cattle and sold the hides to local artisans. “We worked in an impressive way,” they say, talking about how their business began. They started using the leather to cover special thermal containers used in South America to drink tereré, a typical South American drink. The next step was refrigerators and then much more. “We were looking for objects that had never been covered in leather before,” says Carolina.

Sol & Luna conquers the stars

Success came soon after, when they met designer Lazaro Rosa Violan at a trade fair, who included their leather goods in international projects. The surge in orders was then the result of Gwyneth Paltrow‘s promotion. At that point, stars lined up for their products. Behind Sol & Luna are 40 Peruvian craftsmen. Now, production has reached 400 chairs a month, their flagship product. Also famous are tubs, watering cans, salt and pepper shakers, coat racks and ice buckets. Particular products that confirm, however, the positive moment experienced by leather furniture, which is the protagonist of the first 2022 issue of La Conceria.
