Brazil, the number of units slaughtered drops  (-10.3%), but not those by JBS

The number of units slaughtered in Brazil during the first quarter of 2021 decreased. The number of units from JBS, on the other hand, broke a record. Brazilian slaughterhouses have processed 10.3% less bovines compared to 1 years ago. The decrease was further confirmed by the data expressed in tons. Yet, JBS managed to close the quarter with 2 billion Real of net profits (equal to 380 million USD). The number is the highest ever achieved by the company in the first quarter of the year.

The number of units slaughtered drops

According to IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística), Brazilian slaughterhouses processed 6.5 million bovines during the 1st quarter of 2021, against the 7.3 of the 4th quarter of 2020 and the 7.2 million of Q1 2020. The decrease on yearly basis is of -10.3%, and is also projected on the data calculated in outputs of tons of products.

Leather output

IBGE’s data also has to do with leather. During the 1st quarter of 2021 the sample of tanneries included in the market research – meaning those that tan at least 5,000 pieces of leather per year -, claimed they received 7.07 million raw hides. This number is equal to a 6.6% drop compared to the 1st quarter of 2020 and -8% on the three previous months.

Yet, JBS brakes a record

JBS, on the other hand, started off with very positive results. The conglomerate registered a net profit of 2 billion Real (nearly 380 million USD) during the first quarter of 2021. Amount is an “historic record as far as first quarters go”, explained the company. The number is countered by the 5.9 billion Real loss (about 1.11 billion USD) of Q1 of 2020. Specifically, JBS USA Beef had a net revenue of 30.4 billion Real (about 5.76 billion USD), with a 32.2% growth, on yearly base.
