Cotance asks the EU to ratify the trade agreement with Mercosur

Cotance, along with CEC and Euratex, is among the 19 European associations demanding a “rapid” ratification from the EU of the trade agreement with Mercosur. The association (which represents the national tanning association) believes a ratification could not only guarantee an opening into a new market, but it would also help create a better sourcing channel for raw materials. This is currently a delicate market, after the difficulties caused by Covid in 2020 and the Ukraine war. These current conditions show the relevance of diversification: the global market remains volatile and ambiguous.

The trade agreement with Mercosur

The letter was sent to Roberta Metsola, president of the European Parliament, Charles Michel, president of the European Council and Ursula Von der Leyen, president of the EU. This ratification of the trade agreement with the Mercosur area (Latin America) is meeting some resistance on both fronts of the Atlantic (Europe, as well as South America). These associations are insistent on the strategic importance of the deal, especially to follow common objectives, such as the ones concerning sustainability matters. The agreement is attempting to define the best possible trade conditions and represents an incentive for companies to fins common ground on certain topics, such as deforestation.
