An acquisition born from the need to manage a generational transition in the best possible way. Dutch leather representative Maasleder, based in Waalwijk, has acquired Van Oosterum Leder, headquartered in Raamsdonksveer. The deal — as explained by Van Oosterum’s CEO, Evert van Oosterum, in an online statement — “secures the future of the family business”. Van Oosterum will remain in charge as General Manager, while Maasleder will keep both the brand and identity of Van Oosterum Leder operational.
Managing generational change
At the heart of the deal lies the need to ensure a sustainable future for both trading companies. This is not an issue for Maasleder — a representative of several Italian tanneries and a specialist in leather for footwear — which will celebrate its centenary in 2026. The fourth generation is already active in the business, represented by Jurgen Maas, son of current CEO Gerard Maas. The situation is different for Van Oosterum Leder, founded in 1929, where there was no prospect of succession. Hence the decision to join Maasleder. “It’s a big step”, explains Van Oosterum. “The company was founded by my grandfather Jan, and my father Gerard worked here for over sixty years. Maasleder shares our values of quality and service. I’m proud that our name will remain, and that this partnership will ensure continuity of both products and customer support”.
Two centuries of craftsmanship
In the coming months, Van Oosterum Leder will relocate to Maasleder’s premises. “The merger of two strong and complementary companies”, says Jurgen Maas, “will allow us to invest in innovation and offer an even more comprehensive range. The continued involvement of Evert van Oosterum ensures consistency and expertise for our customers. Together, we bring nearly two centuries of craftsmanship. We look to the future with confidence — for the benefit of our businesses, employees and clients”.
