The last fire was the final blow: Tanneries Pechdo closes down

The news has left 33 people out of work and wiped away more than a century of history in one stroke. Tanneries Pechdo, a French tannery founded in 1900 in Millau (in the Aveyron department, Occitanie region), has closed its doors. The company had been struggling for some time, but according to the local press, no one expected its owner, Caroline Krug, to give up so soon.

As mentioned, the tannery had not been in good health. The last of its kind in a region once home to several, it had been under a “safeguard procedure” for the past year. It is now in “judicial liquidation”. The final blow, however, did not come from the market, but from misfortune. Last June, a fire swept through the factory, causing severe damage — particularly to a silo. According to French media reports, the tannery did not have insurance coverage for such an incident. Krug, who had been the company’s majority shareholder since 2017, was unable to find additional resources. And with that, 125 years of history — and 33 jobs — have come to an end.
