What is happening at Ecco Leather's Dutch tannery?

Ecco Leather (Dongen) is conducting a review of the future role of the site within the Ecco group”. There are doubts about the future of the Danish group’s Dutch tannery, hit by a vast fire on the night of Sunday, May 4 to Monday, May 5, 2025. Fortunately, the leather finishing plant had remained intact, but according to the latest rumors, the tannery appears to be in the process of closing and relocating.

Ecco Leather’s Dutch tannery

A vast fire broke out shortly before 10 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, hitting Ecco’s Dutch tannery in Dongen, the Netherlands. A 14,000-square-meter warehouse where 200 people were working, according to the company’s website. Everything seemed to be rebuilt, and the following week Ecco sent our newsroom a hopeful message. “Our leather finishing plant is intact”, it read. “We are working hard to identify an alternative source for our wet blue and crust production in order to reduce disruption to our customers to the absolute possible minimum”.

What’s Happening

Five months later, however, strong doubts are arising about the future of the production plant. According to some of our sources, Ecco is reportedly closing its Dutch tannery in order to relocate its operations, merging them with those of the tannery it already owns in China. So, the Dutch tannery, at least it seems, will only not be rebuilt, but its operations will stop.

Review of the future role

We contacted the company to verify the news, and Ecco responded to us as follows, “We can confirm that Ecco Leather in Dongen is conducting a review of the future role of the site within the Ecco group. Out of respect for our internal processes, we are unable to answer your question today”. So, no confirmation that the business is moving or will move to China, but what remains is the admission that an evaluation of the future of Ecco Tannery Holland is underway.
