Bye bye pandemic: after two years of stop, Craft The Leather restarts

Craft The Leather restarts. After two years of stop due to the pandemic, the training project, now in its ninth edition, organised by Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale (Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium, ndr), is back. Target: young aspiring designers from the most prestigious international fashion and design schools. A workshop where creativity and manual skills become one in order to promote this type of leather. A traditional but extremely versatile material, all waiting to be discovered.

Craft The Leather restarts

Seven students have been selected for the 2022 edition, from four countries. In order: United Kingdom, Netherlands, Italy, Denmark. Each of them attends fashion institutes of the highest level. For example: Amsterdam University, Central Saint Martins in London and Design School Kolding. And again: ISIA Design in Florence, NABA Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan, Reneé Van Den Berg Academy in Hoofdoorp and Royal College of Art in London.

Workshop and competition

The project will mainly consist of two phases. The first concerns the training workshop, held in Tuscany during the week from June 28 to 4 July 2022. The second: the final competition that will showcase the vegetable-tanned leather works created by the students during Lineapelle Milano in February 2023.

The project

The 7 selected students and their teachers will be hosted at Conservatorio Santa Chiara in San Miniato. In the Tuscan tanning district, “they will gain experience with the various types of vegetable-tanned leather and with processing techniques”. Finally, “they will select the materials to be used for the final competition, which involves the creation of a mini-collection of fashion accessories”.
