In a video, Hedi Slimane's homage to the 1960s and Celine

After Paris Fashion Week, Celine releases a short film revealing the new autumn-winter 2024 collection. For “La Collection de l’Arc de Triomphe”, Hedi Slimane, the brand’s creative director, was inspired by the founder, the 1960s and the model Twiggy. A collection of clean-cut and leather dresses, presented on social platforms, anticipating the launch of the brand’s first beauty line.

The inspiration and the short film

Celine’s new collection refers  to the 1960s, the period when the fashion house launched its ready-to-wear line, and to the personal story of its founder, Céline Vipiana, who was stranded with her car in front of the Arc de Triomphe in 1971. The accident gave her the way and time to study the links of the chain arranged around the monument and to merge them with the brand’s emblem. A chain revisited in 2018 by Slimane himself, who incorporated it into many garments.

The short film starts at the French monument, and then moves on to four famous Parisian halls where models, who seem to have stepped out of a time machine, parade. These, thanks to a play on camera, alternate with Bourdelle’s statues. And they present a collection made of clean cuts, analysing the body in a precise way. It is a reference to Richard Avedon, Slimane’s fashion photographer friend and master.

The collection

Celine’s woman for autumn winter 2024 wears short leather miniskirts paired with leather jackets. Not only that. She wears symmetrically cut dresses decorated with large bows or flowers embroidered with crystals, leather coats with wide collars or spotted inlays, boleros in leather and wool. Or minidresses with metallic appliqués and shimmering fringes, recalling the style so much in vogue during the first space explorations.

A fundamental chapter is dedicated to knitwear, in wool and always declined in cocktail dresses and waistcoats. Hedi Slimane therefore creates a collection made up of just a few elements, which however delineate a well-defined style that moves on three colours – black and white, plus a few bright shades. A style, that of the brand, which has become identifiable thanks to the accessories. On the catwalk, in addition to the iconic Triomphe bag with gold chain, the models wear knee-high boots, a string of pearls, double-strap Mary Jane’s and patent leather.
