Hermès announced on the morning of Friday 30 January that it will open a new leather goods workshop in Les Andelys, a French town of just over 8,000 inhabitants in the Normandy region. The facility will employ 260 artisans, although the opening date has not been disclosed yet.
Hermès announces a new leather goods workshop
Hermès continues to open new leather goods workshops to support the growing demand for its bags. Since 2010, the company has opened 13 leather goods sites, all located in France. Upcoming openings include Loupes (Gironde), which will be inaugurated this year, Charleville-Mézières (Ardennes) in 2027, and Colombelles (Calvados) around 2028. The new Les Andelys site now joins this list, in an area where Hermès already operates the Val-de-Reuil workshop, opened in 2017, and the Louviers workshop, inaugurated in 2023.
The industrial project
Hermès will build the new leather goods workshop on the site of the former Holophane plant, a glassworks opened in 1920 that produced specialised lighting, including street lamps and luminaires. Once operational, the facility will employ 260 artisans, who will be recruited with the support of France Travail and the Normandy regional education authority. Training will then be provided directly by the maison at its craft school in Louviers. According to Paris Normandie, Hermès had initially planned to open a new leather goods workshop in Pîtres (also in Normandy), but that project fell through. The local council was working to identify an alternative site, but Hermès has now reportedly opted for Les Andelys.
