Job crisis? 350 candidates show up for 60 jobs at Desa

350 candidates showed up for 60 jobs offered by Desa’s new leather goods manufacturing site. A case that would discredit the idea that manufacturing companies in Italy are struggling to recruit workers. In this sense though, it was probably Desa’s decision to open the site in Poppi (Arezzo), near the Tuscan leather goods’ districts, to impact the outcome, as there is a lot of demand for personnel in the area. Desa’s new factory will become operational by the end of March, and, at the same time, the company will also be conducting the training course for employees. Personnel selection will be managed in collaboration with Randstad.

350 candidates show up for 60 jobs

“We currently have more than 350 candidates and the plant will employ a total of 60 people at full regime – explained Burak Celet, CEO of Desa, in the press release that announced the training course -. First, we will hire 7 to 10 expert workers and 15 to be trained. Depending on the outcome of the first edition (how many participants will be hired), we will add 2 or 3 more”. The course’s goal is to guarantee Desa’s customers with the needed quality standards and thus select the candidates that are most fit to establish a long-term work relation with the company.

Training course

The specialized training course will last 250 hours and will involve all new hires, made 80% by women. Beside from training them on general topics such as health and safety in the workplace, the training will also include the leather skills needed, such as cutting, preparation, assembly, and sowing. The course’s graduates will use innovative machinery located in the Poppi manufacturing site. “Casentino never used to be a leather goods’ area, so the best way to make Desa’s startup a success is training – points out Annalisa Togni, unit manager Randstad –. The response from the area was incredibly positive, so we already opened a dedicated recruiting channel”.
