India, ban to sell cattle in markets and fairs. Tanneries risks to shut down

The Indian leather chain risks a paralysis due to the Animal Cruelty Prevention Regulation issued by the New Delhi Government on May 26. The new provisions stipulate that cattle (cow, bull, ox, buffalo and calves) can exclusively be sold in farms to ensure the traceability of the product. Indian meat and leather associations, which in recent months have dealt with more than a measure taken by local and national governments of radical Hinduism, are furious. According to the CLE, Council for Leather Exports, Indian leather sector chain could lose 50% of the exports, while the need to buy tanning raw material from abroad will lead to a rise in prices. The CLE ultimately fears that the great Indian rivals such as Pakistan and China will benefit from the weakness of Indian leather.
