Chaos over Greenwashing in Brussels. On June 20, Brussels had made a surprise announcement that it was withdrawing the proposal focused on greenwashing, included in the broader Green Claims Directive. That’s because it would have also involved SMEs. Also in the background is the tariff game, with Europe seeking an agreement with the US. A negotiating meeting between the European Parliament and member states was scheduled for today. Late news, however, is that that meeting scheduled today between the European Parliament and member states to discuss the greenwashing directive has been canceled, Ansa reports. This could be interpreted as a confirmation about a possible withdrawal of the proposal.
The knots of the greenwashing directive
The proposal, which was close to being confirmed, took a sudden turn on Friday, June 20, when sources in the Polish EU presidency announced their intention to withdraw the proposal. “We are putting the dossier on hold: there are too many doubts and we need clarity from the European Commission on its intentions: only then can we decide on the next steps”, a spokesman said (source Ansa). Officially, the reason for the possible about-face is that the directive would have affected 30 million European micro-businesses, as they would have been forced to bear the cost of complying with the new legislation.
No confirmation yet
There have been political parties calling for the proposal to be withdrawn, just as there could be European strategies on the horizon for a dialogue with the United States to reach a trade agreement by July 9 and avoid tariffs. For the time being, EU executives haven’t yet formalized the request to withdraw the anti-greenwashing directive, and it’s clarified that it is “still under consideration.”
