Chinese Song Shin invests in a new tannery in Bangladesh

The investment made by Song Shin Leather, Chinese tanning group headquartered in Guangdong, is interesting, at least on paper. According to the deal underwritten on March 27th with Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) and local authorities, the group will invest 6 million USD (5.5 million euro) to build a new tannery in the Comilla area. This is, other than an injection of capital, also a show of faith for a segment that has struggled to build itself up with no outside push (the case of Savar).

Chinese effort

Of course, the promise by Song Shin Leather is only on paper. According to what said by press agency BSS, it’s not known when the Chinese group plans on opening the new site, nor what conditions it obtained from local authorities. All we know is that the site will tan caw and buffalo hides for up to 750,000 square meters of material each year. When in full regime, the plant will supposedly employ around 100 people. We will see.
