A new record: 560,000 dollars for a pair of Air Jordan 1985

There is no record that resists Michael Jordan. Now a former player for 17 years, the NBA star has just pulverised another one: the most expensive price ever paid at auction for a pair of sneakers. And it is no coincidence that this happened while Netiflix aired the latest episodes of the docufilm The Last Dance, which tells the 1997-1998 season of the Chicago Bulls.

There is no record that resists MJ

The Last Dance effect pushed the auction titled The One-MJ’s Air Jordan 1s to very high levels. Sotheby’s called it to beat the first sneakers ever signed by MJ. The value at which they were sold is stratospheric: 560,000 dollars, the highest ever reached for a pair of sneakers.

Pulverised record

The figure pulverised the previous record held by the 1972 Nike Waffle Racing Moon Shoe sneakers. Their value is almost small: 437,500 dollars. The auction house had estimated the value of Jordan’s sneakers between 100,000 and 150,000 dollars. In the last 20 minutes since the auction, bids have swelled to over 3.5 times Sotheby’s maximum estimate.
