Nothing to do, it going to close: the British Clarks confirm the farewell of its Somerset factory, with 35 layoffs

Clarks confirms the closure of its Somerset factory, two years after opening it. The decision leads to 35 redundancies, while another 10 employees have been relocated to the company that a few days ago appointed the former Geox Giorgio Presca as the new CEO. The news with the confirmation comes after Clarks revealed in January that they had initiated a 30-day consultation procedure with the employees because the factory was unable to meet production targets and costs. “Despite our efforts, production levels and cost targets could not be achieved in the short to medium term and, after a period of consultation, the proposal was accepted and the factory will close” reads a statement published on Retail Gazette. “We have a strong duty of attention towards all our employees and we have supported them through this process, offering help for relocation and identifying alternative roles within Clarks”. The brand’s headquarters will remain in Somerset anyway.
