Craft the Leather reaches its seventh year: 10 new design talents compete at Lineapelle96

Hailing from Japan, China, Spain, England, the United States, and Sweden, ten young designers will compete this year in the seventh edition of the Craft the Leather project, organised by the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale. At Lineapelle96, the designers will display their collections, the product of a workshop that they attended last May in San Miniato to find out about the production of vegetable-tanned leather in Tuscany. As part of this experience, the designers, who come from some of the most prestigious international fashion schools, had the opportunity to get first-hand experience of some of the manufacturing techniques, discovering and getting to know vegetable-tanned leather. The winner will be chosen by tallying the votes from three different sources: “a highly qualified technical jury”; an online poll on the Facebook page of the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale (during the course of Lineapelle96); and votes given directly by visitors at the Craft the Leather stand at Lineapelle96 (Pavilion 96, Stand A02/A18). “The prize is a 2,000 Euro scholarship to spend on further training,” Barbara Mannucci from the Consorzio explained. “For these young designers, it’s a perfect opportunity to show their work. A number of the visitors at Lineapella recognise the high quality of the collections in the competition. More than once we’ve been asked, quite specifically, the names and contact details of the designers.” The competition has quickly become a great launch pad for talented young designers.
