Turkey, workers foresee a dark 2017 for the leather industry: exports between -10% and -20%

The decrease should be somewhere between -10% and -20%, for a turnover that was 1.6 billion USD in 2016. 2017 exports for the Turkish leather industry will close deeply in red. According to market data collected by leatherbiz.com, the negative trend for the industry is also due to an unusually long summer. The prolonged period of heat cause tanneries and production sites to extend the employees’ vacation period (unpaid vacation, it would seem), which in the end caused a collapse of productivity. Meanwhile Ankara’s government has put a new veto to wet-blue leather exports in order to help domestic production. Who knows if that will help.
